Put Your Best Foot Forward In Costa Cálida

28 October 2019

The Costa Cálida can play an essential part in a mind, body and soul with its walking routes across the region.

The region of Murcia’s diverse landscape us becoming increasingly popular among UK tourists and is best explored by foot. The stunning scenery, natural beauty and authentic Spanish inland and coastal routes are waiting to be discovered.

Routes can be found to suit all levels of fitness and stamina with guides also on hand to explain some of the history on offer.

Alternatively, maps and routes can be provided to make these discoveries alone at your own pace to then work up an appetite to enjoy the region’s superb gastronomy and wines.

Among the most popular areas are:

  • The Calblanque Regional Park, situated between Cartagena and La Manga, is one of the best preserved unspoilt natural landscapes on the coast with mountains, golden-coloured beaches and isolated coves.
  • Las Salinas de San Pedro, to the north of the Mar Menor, is a wetland reserve with salt flats and sand dunes where migratory birds such as flamingos can be seen.
  • The Sierra Espuña Regional Park, around 40km from Murcia City, reveals a wide range of environments: from high-mountainous areas, dense forests and rivers and reservoirs with incredible rugged scenery to enjoy.
  • Estrecho de Bolvonegro, near Moratalla, hides an almost invisible valley through rock formations with waterfalls, natural pools and a landscape which has been formed over millions of years.
  • Sierra de Las Moreras, Mazarrón is an enthralling combination of the natural beauty of several protected habitats. Walk uphill to heights of almost 500m above sea level and along Mazarrón’s cliff tops before descending down towards deserted coves and beaches.

Many of the organised hikes are free to join with other walkers, so it’s also a great way to meet like-minded individuals and a real sense of accomplishment as some of the more challenging routes are conquered.
