History meets the future in Costa Cálida

10 March 2020

The region of Murcia is combining the appeal of the past with the modern technology of the future to bring some of its most famous attractions to life.

The Museum of the Roman Theatre in Cartagena welcomed more than 2m visitors in 2019 and showcases artefacts excavated from the magnificent Roman Theatre, which dates more than 2,000 years.

But there is also a 21st century flavour to it with the use of virtual reality headsets at various points within the monument to show a 3D recreation of how it looked at the time it was in use. There are also virtual ‘flights’ through the site, virtual guided tours and even a short excerpt from the type of play which would have served as entertainment for the people of that time.

The city itself is a living monument to a bygone era and is renowned for its archaeological sites with many Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish ruins remaining.

And, its Port of Cultures project is designed to make the city’s historical and cultural sights more accessible for tourists – a good example being the panoramic elevator which connects the port with the Concepción Castle.

Another city in the region brimming with history is Lorca.

The impressive medieval castle, for example, where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together for centuries, can be seen from far away and is the focal point, but there are plenty of free-to-enter museums, squares, palaces, notable buildings and churches too.

Within the Castle’s grounds, The Archaeological Park of the Castle and Synagogue is well worth a visit and has also been preserved immaculately.

The region’s strategic location as a Mediterranean enclave, has ensured it retains many of its important historical links and sees a huge mix of culture and history with rock-paintings in cave-shelters dating back to the Iberian period; Arab medinas; Christian castles, watch-towers, churches and temples; and a huge array of civil and military buildings to enjoy.
