Terras da Comporta is leading the drive to keep senior golfers active in their later years after launching a new initiative giving free rounds to octogenarians on its two 18-hole championship courses – the globally acclaimed Dunas Course and The Torre Course, which opens this summer.
Recognising the many health benefits of golf for seniors, the award-winning venue near Lisbon is offering members of the Portuguese Golf Federation the exclusive opportunity to enjoy eight complimentary rounds across the two courses when they reach the age of 80.
Golf is widely acknowledged to offer numerous physical, mental and social benefits to elderly people. As well as being a low-impact activity that improves cardiovascular health, muscle strength, flexibility and balance, it also recognised for stimulating cognitive function, reducing stress and providing opportunities for social interaction and community building.
Under the terms of the initiative, any golfers who are members of a golf club with a course affiliated to the Portuguese Golf Federation and are aged 80 or above are eligible to take advantage of the offer, with rounds bookable on The Dunas Course and The Torre Course seven days a week.
The Dunas Course – architect David McLay-Kidd’s first golf design project in mainland Europe – has quickly risen to become one of Europe’s must-play courses since opening in October 2023. The acclaimed par-71 layout has already received a number of leading industry accolades, including being named as the ‘World’s Best Golf Course’ at the 2024 World Golf Awards and as the number one golf course in Portugal by users of respected industry website Leading Courses’ updated ‘Golfers’ Choice Awards 2025’ for the second year running.
Complementing it is the eagerly anticipated Torre Course, which is being launched this summer and is European Ryder Cup legend Sergio Garcia’s first major golf course design project. Inspired by Real Club Valderrama – which the 2017 US Masters champion cites as his favourite course in the world – the par-72 course features generous fairways, small greens and measure 6,575 metres from the back tees.
Rodrigo Ulrich, director of golf at Terras da Comporta, said: “Staying active is so important as we age, and playing golf has been shown to have so many benefits to the quality of people’s health and wellbeing.
“With the majority of our courses opening in their lifetime after 1945, golfers in their eighties are a particularly important generation for golf in Portugal. They have played an important role in the growth of the game in the country and it’s our pleasure to recognise their efforts and extend this free invitation to enjoy two of Europe’s most exciting golf experiences.”
Situated one hour south of Lisbon and owned by Vanguard Properties – Portugal’s largest real estate developer – Terras da Comporta will boast a wide range of golf, lifestyle and sporting facilities when it is fully open including tennis, padel, pickleball and horse riding. The development also includes an array of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums.

About Terras da Comporta:
The Terras da Comporta development, located in the heart of Comporta, is the result of Vanguard Properties’ acquisition of assets from the Herdade da Comporta Real Estate Fund in 2019.
It is made up of two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land in the Alcácer do Sal municipality, and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares of land in the Grândola municipality. Both enjoy exceptionally tranquil and beautiful locations in dense pine forest. Torre is found near Comporta Village and its iconic rice fields, and Dunas, eight kilometres to the south, is next to Praia do Pego beach.
The Terras da Comporta project is founded on the best environmental, economic and social sustainability practices, assuming a long-term perspective that will undoubtedly contribute to the region’s development. Positioned in the market’s most exclusive segment, where aspects such as quality, comfort and privacy are given top priority, both Torre and Dunas offer a wide range of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums.
There will also be excellent sports facilities including two 18-hole golf courses designed by world-renowned golf architect David McLay-Kidd (Dunas) and US Masters champion, Sergio Garcia (Torre). Having been originally launched by McLay-Kidd in 2010, the Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta opened for play on June 1, 2023, with its official inauguration taking place in October 2023. The Torre Course is Garcia’s first major golf course design project and will open for play for the first time this summer.
