Those who wish to strike a powerful drive down the breath-taking fairways of the renowned Smurfit Course at The K Club, loft a delicate chip over one of the many stunning lakes and sink a beautiful putt across one of its 18 pristine greens will be able to do so in the new year as members of one of Ireland’s most exclusive golf clubs.
After hosting the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in 2016, the prestige that The K Club is held in has never been higher, and the membership offers up for grabs are far too tempting to be passed up. By joining the Smurfit Golf Club for 2018 now, new members will be able to get 14 months for the price of 12 as they will be able to use the club’s facilities for the remainder of 2017. They will also be given a complimentary four ball which they can enjoy with their friends.
Designed by the legendary Arnold Palmer, the exquisite Smurfit Course at The K Club is known as one of Europe’s great venues for major tournaments, and the fact that this course has played host to the European Open on three occasions shows its importance on an international scale.
In what can be best described as an inland links, the Smurfit Course presents plenty of challenges for golfers to test their range of shots, whether that be casting out a drive with the wind at your back or trying to avoid one of the many lakes or sand traps dotted out around the spectacular course.
This course has played host to some of golf’s most exciting moments. Who could forget the excitement of the 2004 Smurfit European Open when Retief Goosen went on to win just two weeks after taking his second US Open title? Or the closing stages of the 2007 Smurfit European Open, when Colin Montgomerie finally ended his 18-month drought without a trophy and somehow stayed out of the water on the 18th to win the 2007 European Open by just one shot.
Membership for the Smurfit Golf Club is €1,550 for men (including GUI Levies & Insurance) and €950 for ladies (inclusive of ILGU Levies), while a new membership category, Intermediate, caters for golfers between the ages of 18 and 25 and is just €950 (inclusive of GUI Levies). Men who sign up for the €1,550 membership will receive a free Junior Membership, while those who sign up to the €950 offer can avail of an additional Junior Membership for just €350 (inclusive of GUI/ILGU Levies)
Members will be able to enjoy complimentary towels and toiletries in the stunning locker rooms at the Smurfit Golf Club, along with access to the luxurious locker rooms where golfers can relax in the sauna or steam room following a round of golf. Tuition from a PGA professional can also be provided to members, while they will be able to use practice facilities that include a chipping and putting green and driving range. There are also weekly competitions organised for members and those who join up will be eligible to play in the annual Smurfit member and guest competitions.
The Smurfit clubhouse is the ideal setting for before and after a round of golf, and new members will also receive some food and beverage credit to enjoy all the tasty offerings on offer. Set over three floors, the club house also includes The K Thai Restaurant, The Smurfit Bar, a pro shop and the stunning. The Smurfit Bar and K Thai on the first floor offers stunning views over the course to the Dublin mountains.
The course itself has continued to be regarded as one of Europe’s best, and the signature hole is the tricky 7th which features a dramatic rockface that rises some 60 feet out of the lake, giving it the name of ‘The Quarry Hole’.
