Elite Golf returns to PGA Catalunya Resort

15 September 2020

(Girona, Spain – September 15, 2020) Elite golf returned to PGA Catalunya Resort at the weekend with the inaugural PGA Catalunya Amateur Cup by Sergio Garcia Foundation (WARG).

A field of 114 players – male and female – competed in the 54-hole tournament over the Tour Course. PGA Catalunya Resort has hosted many high-profile events, including the Open de España three times, and it is recognised by Golf World’s Top 100 Rankings as the no.1 golf resort in Spain.

The PGA Amateur Cup by Sergio Garcia Foundation (WARG) counted towards the World Amateur Golf Ranking, the Absolute Grand Prix masculine and feminine and Cadet 2020 of the Federació Catalana de Golf.

Spaniard Jaime Montojo was the men’s champion with rounds of 66-66-68 for a total of 16 under par, while Natalia Guseva was the female winner by an impressive 12 shots on 15 under par after rounds of 68-67-66.

Promising youngster Jose Luis Ballester, the reigning Spanish Amateur Champion and number 27 in World Amateur Golf Rankings, finished runner-up by one shot in the men’s competition after rounds of 69-68-64.

There were also prizes for the first-placed cadets – Jorge Siyuan Hao (-4 total) and Julia Ballester (+8) – while Carlos Roldos Perera (-7) and Anna Cañado Espinal (-1) were the respective boy and girl champions.

Enric Lopez, the Head Professional at PGA Catalunya Resort, said: “It was fantastic to have tournament golf back at PGA Catalunya Resort, and the standard we saw over the three days of competition was amazing. The Tour Course is in unbelievable condition and I heard nothing but praise from the players. The event really brought the community together and there was a real buzz around the place.”

PGA Catalunya Resort is home to the Sergio Garcia Junior Golf Academy, which is a collaboration between the resort and the Sergio Garcia Foundation and aims to coach the next generation of elite golfers and to make golf more accessible to children from all walks of life.

Lopez added: “After many years working at the Sergio Garcia Junior Academy, we wanted to offer our students, as well as other amateurs, a high-level tournament in which they could compete.”

The event was also supported by the Federació Catalana de Golf and the app ‘Imagine’.

PGA Catalunya Resort has two superb 18-hole layouts in the Tour and Stadium courses – the latter the stage for the Open de España in 2000, 2009 and 2014 – and it also boasts the luxurious 5* Hotel Camiral, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The resort’s extensive facilities include a hi-tech golf practice area, a 20m outdoor swimming pool and a family adventure park with a thrilling zip-wire through the surrounding woodland.

In addition, the European Tour Destination comprises a discreet, low-density real estate development, with first-class leisure facilities and a select number of villa plots, stylish modern semi-detached villas, and luxury apartments, carefully integrated into and connected with their natural surroundings.
