Abama Golf, the first golf course in Spain to receive IAGTO “Quality Assured” Certification

02 January 2020

The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) has distinguished Abama Golf, a golf course located in Guía de Isora, in the south of Tenerife, as the first course in Spain and the Canary Islands to receive their 'quality assured' certification.

Peter Walton, Chief Executive of IAGTO, explained “We launched our Quality Assured program in October last year and it is fitting that Abama Golf is the first golf course in Spain to receive this accolade. Having carried out over 250 golf tourism audits over the past twenty years, IAGTO is in a unique position to assess how well a golf course is set up to receive international and national golf visitors.

“During the QA Certification process, we concluded that Abama’s undoubted quality of the golf course is matched by a terrific customer service in all areas. There is no doubt that Abama Golf is perfectly setup for the first-time golf visitor and that every effort has been made to deliver the best possible experience both on and off the course.”.

Abama Golf, a course designed by the renowned golfer Dave Thomas, is consolidating among lovers of this sport as one of the best in Europe. Demanding for the most experienced of players and entertaining for beginners, the layout is combined with its incomparable panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the island of La Gomera, which makes the practice of golf at this course an unforgettable experience and a wonderful immersion in nature, since the course contains more than 300 species of subtropical plants, among which are up to 22,000 palm trees.

The resort is constantly growing, and many golfers are also looking at it to have a second residence. In fact, Abama has become an emerging destination for European golf tourists, and currently promotes various real estate products including Bellevue, Las Atalayas, Casas de Lago, Custom Villas, Jardines de Abama and Villas del Tenis.

Although the sale of some of these promotions are already sold out, the construction of the new phases has already begun and delivery is expected by the end of 2020, in the case of Villas del Tenis, and by the spring of 2021, in the case of Jardines de Abama. The development of Abama began in November 2002, with the inauguration of The Ritz-Carlton, Abama and the Golf course in 2005, explains Brendan Breen, “Five years later, in 2010, the real estate development of the resort managed by Arum Group began and in 2015 Las Terrazas de Abama managed my My Way Meaningful Hotels. So far, more than 375 million has been invested in the overall development of the resort.”

When Dave Thomas designed the course, he created the “Augusta” of Europe where 22 lakes come in to play, as well as numerous waterfalls and bunkers of white sand. It is considered by the “Leading Courses” platform as the best golf course in the Canary Islands and in the top 10 of Spain. Golf Digest, one of the most read magazines in the golf sector, deemed it as one the best golf resorts Europe. Among its services, it offers a golf academy, which allows the improvement and learning of the sport through their PGA professionals and a five-hectare practice area with three par 3 holes for beginners and also a driving range, chipping and putting greens.
